The National Housing Conference (NHC) recently launched its latest venture in the organization’s ongoing effort to address the persistent affordable housing crisis in America: “Beyond Four Walls: Conversations on Affordable Housing,” a bimonthly podcast series hosted by NHC President and CEO David Dworkin. The aim of the podcast is to “engage industry leaders and policymakers in candid conversations about America’s pressing housing issues.”
According to NHC Senior Marketing & Communications Director Kara Beigay, the podcast “goes beyond the rhetoric and engages with key figures in the housing and finance sectors to discuss tangible, impactful, and achievable solutions to the affordable housing crisis. What are the root causes of the crisis? How can we encourage innovation in housing solutions? What role does legislation play in shaping the future of affordable housing? These are the types of questions we ask our guests.”
The inaugural episode features Senator Mark Warner (D-Va.), and covers a wide range of topics, including the racial wealth gap, the Basel III Endgame rules, the importance of public-private partnerships in addressing the financial and economic disparities in underserved communities, and several pieces of legislation aimed at addressing these issues, including the LIFT Act, the Community Development Investment Tax Credit, and the LIVE HERE bill, to name just a few.
Upcoming guests on the podcast include Michael Barr, Vice Chair for Supervision of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, housing leaders Linda Mandolini, President of Eden Housing, and Robin Hughes, CEO of the Housing Partnership Network, and authors Richard Rothstein and Leah Rothstein, who will talk about their new book, Just Action: How to Challenge Segregation Enacted Under the Color of Law. Panels of expert housers will also delve into diverse topics such as adaptive reuse, the state of Native housing, Generation Z and millennial homeownership, disaster resiliency, and fostering interest in housing and community development careers.
“The conversations promise to be insightful, challenge conventional wisdom, and shed light on innovative approaches that can make a real difference,” says Beigay, adding that “If you know of individuals, experts, or advocates who are making significant strides in addressing affordable housing challenges or would like to suggest a topic for a future podcast, please email info@nhc.org with your recommendation. Together, we can shed light and explore solutions to this crucial issue.”
New episodes of “Beyond Four Walls: Conversations on Affordable Housing” will drop twice a month on Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music. The podcast is also available on www.nhc.org. To listen, click here.
